ShopSavvy or Shop Savvy? Whats in a name?
November 19, 2008
ShopSavvy, the Android application we launched on the G1, is a simple price comparison tool that allows you to use your camera as a barcode scanner. Originally we called the application GoCart, but T-Mobile’s brand consultants decided that GoCart wasn’t the best fit for their ‘featured’ application. It was decided that our new name would be ShopSavvy - i.e. joining the ‘Shop’ and ‘Savvy’ into a single new word. When I searched for ShopSavvy on Google back in September I could scarcely find more than a thousand results, today there are more than 95,000. Here is the problem, consumers don’t combine the two words when they ‘hear’ about our application on NPR, ABC or CNN. Check out the search trend on Google Trends:

Looking at search engine traffic we are very aware users are entering ‘Shop Savvy‘ instead of ‘ShopSavvy’ into Google. Our website doesn’t even appear on Google relative to the Shop Savvy search string. In the UK, no one EVER searches for ShopSavvy. The press gets it right, i.e. that is why there are 95,000 mentions of the application using the ‘ShopSavvy’ name, but consumers have voted that Shop Savvy is the right name. How annoying! If you are looking for Shop Savvy the best place to go is http://www.biggu.com. Hopefully this post will help associate Shop Savvy with our company’s website.
