Startup Profile: Pop Technology
June 2, 2008
There is a very cool company here in Dallas that you may not have heard of called Pop Technology. With four employees and $1MM in capital from friends and family, Jon Cameron founded the company back in 2004 and expects to do $1.4MM in revenue this year.
Pop! Technology has developed barcodes for manufacturers and retailers that enable fraud detection, quality assurance and automated supply chain. Pop’s technology turns a standard printed barcode into an interactive barcode offering critical data to a business including: if a product is authentic, if an item has been mishandled, or from which shelf a consumer selected a product. For instance, their barcode can detect if a package of chicken has been exposed to improper temperatures preventing the item from being sold to consumers.
The technology is protected by a method patent (6,685,094) that Jon filed in 1999:
A bar code (10) incorporating thermochromic materials in selected modules (20) such that its code changes with temperature. Below a specified temperature, the bar code (10) displays a first code. Above this temperatures, the bar code (10) displays a second code. The bar code (10) is printed with conventional printing equipment onto conventional printing media, and is scanned with conventional bar code scanning equipment. Check out the .
Ron graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in Finance and prior to founding Pop Technology spent time working for Frito-Lay and i2 Technologies. When Ron isn’t inventing cool gadgets for the retail industry he can be found reading Drug Channels and the Invent Blog. When I asked Ron what sort of exit he would consider he said, “I absolutely plan on exit through an acquistion. We have already had one offer, which I liked, but the other investors rejected. We had another inquiry last week which we have not yet looked at. We plan on exiting in 2010 or 2011.” In May, Ron engaged GrowThink to help him raise another $2MM. Very cool stuff.
