Startup Profile: Innovative Business Golf Solutions

May 27, 2008

Scot Duke, the CEO of IBGS, spent some time explaining his business to me and I thought I would take a moment to share our conversation (with his permission) with everyone.  Scot’s business, Innovative Business Golf Solutions, LLC, is a self-funded consulting company that helps businesses incorporate golfing into their sales process.  His multi-faceted program helps business owners use golf to develop new relationship and strengthen existing relationships.  He has a unique offering that merges offline and online with seminars and workshops that involve golf.  Talk about building a business around what you love!

Scot explained why he started his company,

“Too many business people who attempt to use golf as a six hour sales pitch were killing the game of golf and causing the middle portion of the golf economy to collapse.  I started IBGS in an effort to enlighten business people on how to use golf as a business tool that builds solid business relationships.  From that I found that many business golfers are not familiar with how to use the internet due to the lack of trust they have in people who online are online and do not play golf.  I saw a market for me to be the go between that finds what works and does not work online and advise offline business people where to go and not go online.”

I was surprised to learn Scot had more than 600 blogs in his newsreader, his favorites being BusinessWeek’s Blogspotting and The Golf Blog (of course).  When he isn’t reading a blog you might be surprised to learn his has 12 books in the works.  I thought I was over my head working on one book.  Scot’s primary influence in business is Darrell Crall, executive director of the PGA, who he frequently reaches out to for advice and council.  Scot’s partner, Paul O’Flaherty is the director of IT, is one of three additional people he hopes have on board before the end of the year.  Scot’s on target to hit $300,000 in revenue the first quarter of 2009 and hopes to hit $5MM within five years with a team of ten full time employees.  Looking for a unique program for your sales team?  Scot might be your man. . .
