Movie Reviews: Ironman and Speed Racer

May 10, 2008

/files/2008/05/ironman1.jpgIf you only have time to choose one movie this weekend, I recommend Ironman.  Ethan and I watched Ironman last weekend and Speed Racer last night.  Ethan seemed to like Speed Racer, but for some reason I was pretty disappointed.

As I kid I used to watch Speed Racer and from what I can remember it was always a little slower than the other cartoons I liked to watch.  The only reason I watched the show was the car - the Mach 5.  The cartoon was ALL about the car.  The movie, on the other hand, was all about the people and their relationships.  Maybe it was just me (and my advancing age), but I never really cared much more than the cool gadgets on the car.  I went to YouTube to watch a few of the old episodes and I am convinced that Emile Hirsch, who plays Speed Racer, was the main reason I was disappointed by this film.  My advice?  Wait for the DVD or iTunes.

Ironman, on the other hand, I liked because the John Favereau struck the perfect balance between the technology (i.e. the suit) and the people (i.e. Robert Downey Jr.).  Ironman was never a super hero I cared about, but Robert created a character that I couldn’t help but like.

The biggest irony was that what I didn’t like about Speed Racer, was exactly what I loved about Ironman ~ go figure!
