Resumes are dead?

March 17, 2008

I think I am almost done asking for resumes from potential candidates.  Why?  I would prefer to read your resume as it appears on your LinkedIn account (see my profile).  LinkedIn gives your experience and expertise context.  I can see who and what you are connected to and with.  Isn’t that far more interesting than a .doc file attached to my already bulging email box?  If you don’t have a LinkedIn account do I really want to talk to you anyway?  Perhaps resumes have a little more life in them, but I am putting them on the endangered list.  Advice to anyone looking for a job (and anyone not looking for a job):

  • Get a LinkedIn profile ASAP.
  • Start making connections.
  • Start making recommendations.
  • Start requesting endorsements.

Give it a try, start sending your LinkedIn profile instead of your resume.  Let me know how it works.

    I wish resumes were dead.

Unfortunately, the nature of the recruiter is dead set on having it. I’m sure there are exceptions to the rule, however, the bulk of recruiters I’ve come across always want a resume they can review and send on to their client for consideration.

It’s kind of like lawyers and having a million paper copies of EVERYTHING.

This is one behavior I will be trying to change with my website, Hire-Engineers.com.

In my own experience, I’ve even told people they can download a word resume from my Jobster profile but they still end up asking for one via email. !?!?!
