Jeff Williams, hottest VC in Dallas!

January 24, 2008

Jeff Williams, the managing director for Hunt Ventures in Dallas is one of the hottests VCs you may have never heard of.  Jeff Williams is the guy behind Softricity (acquired by Microsoft).  His other notable investments include SyChip, Keibi, RipCode and MetaCarta.  Currently he serves on several boards including Sirific Wireless, RipCode (Dallas based), Keibi and AppTrigger.

Dallas based Hunt Ventures is a small private VC founded in 1998.  According to The Funded (ratings of VC groups), Jeff Williams’ group is rated 4.6 out of 5, making it the top ranked VC in the Dallas area.  Very cool.  Sean Jackson over at Lead Maverick spent some time with Jeff Williams and came away beaming.  He explains Jeff’s advice:

  1. Get an angel round via friends and family - every VC wants to know that you have gone through the fund raising process. Plus you need the money to build credibility. Yes, Jeff said, that Dallas is a hard place to do it, but not impossible. (He then introduced me to an Angel investor).
  2. Hire some people! You can not scale a business from 1 person. You need a team. This is why you need the money. Get a VP Sales, CTO, and other key people on board first.
  3. Get a customer - preferably a lot of them. This is also crucial because they validate your idea with their purchase.
  4. Know your market. You must be extremely versed in your market including competitors and how your solution fits into them.
