EEstor Startup Profile
January 13, 2008
Cedar Park, Texas based EEstor is getting noticed (especially by stock promoters of Zenn Motor). On January 9th the company signed a deal with Lockheed-Martin for the exclusive rights to the technology for military applications. EEstor claims to have developed a superior type of capacitor for electricity storage, which EEStor calls ‘Electrical Energy Storage Units’ (EESU). Its CEO and president is Richard Weir, who is also the inventor named on their principal technology patent. The company is funded by Kleiner Perkins ($?) and Zenn Motor ($2.5MM).
Based on EEstor’s technology, a five-minute charge should give the capacitor sufficient energy to drive a small car 500 miles (800 km). However, standard household wiring is not capable of delivering the power required for this, so charging times this short would probably require purpose-built high capacity dispensing stations. Overnight charging at home should still be practical. One convenient, but more expensive, option might be to buy a second EEstor unit for the home which could be charged overnight using cheap, off-peak electricity and could then be used to charge the EEstor unit in the car in 5-10 minutes on demand. Competitors include Standford, Maxwell Technologies, AltairNano and Skeleton NanoLab.
Of course, the company’s website shows up as a NetSol placeholder see here. If you know anymore about the company, or have Richard’s contact information please drop me a line. Thanks!
