When the recruiter calls . . .
March 16, 2007
Once or twice a month I get a call or an email from a search firm asking if I would be interested in interviewing. I never really spend any time talking to them. Last week Heidrick & Struggles called and instead of letting them know I wasn’t interested, I suggested that I probably wouldn’t be interested. They asked me to send over my resume and I realized that the last time I updated my resume was eight years ago in 1999. I then looked over my pre-1999 resume and realized that all three of the telecom/internet companies I worked for are now called Level (3).
I started out at ICG Communications in sales, ICG was bought by Level (3) last year. I then went to work for Broadwing in sales management, Broadwing was bought by Level (3) early this year. Finally I went to work for Genuity in sales management, Genuity was bought by Level (3) in 2003. It took ten minutes to update my resume and send it over. Wonder if they will ever call me back?
I can’t imagine ANYONE actually hiring me. The truth is that I don’t want to move from Dallas, I don’t like to travel and I have a hard time taking direction. I am having fun building the Big in Japan business and I am not sure I would want to actually work for someone else. I guess that is why we have avoiding raising outside capital for our business. My advice? Don’t hire me… (not that I would take the job anyway)
