The right response to 1402?

I can’t help but comment yet again on the war between Israel and the Hezbullah.Â The world is outraged that Israel continues to respond to the attacks by the Hezbullah.Â World leaders claim that Israel is overreacting.Â I am floored by these statements.

How many rockets would the Hebullah need to fire at Washington DC before we were compelled to hunt down the people responsible?Â One?Â Two?Â Ten?Â One hundred?Â One thousand?Â I dare say if anyone dared fire a single missle at a U.S. city they would feel the full force of our military.Â I suspect this is true of any western power (UK, Germany, France, Spain and so on).

Over 1,402 rockets have been fired at Israel since the first three Israeli soldiers were killed (perhaps even more that failed to hit Israel).Â Let that sink in.Â FOURTEEN HUNDRED AND TWO rockets have been fired at Israel this month.Â Over 1,262 Israeli’s have been wounded.Â What would you expect the U.S. to do if the Hezbullah fired ten rockets into New York City?Â I think you would agree we should figure out how to disarm these people… right?

hmmm … 1402 rockets in total, vs 23 tonnes of explosives on one bunker. 30 dead vs 300 dead. 10,000 foreigners in an emergency evacuation.

Has Israel inflicted more damage than it has received? When does it become an overreaction?

Israel clearly has the right to respond & defend. But when that right creates a humanitarian crisis above and beyond what was created in the initial aggression against it, there needs to be clear debate on what constitutes an overreaction.

Everyone has the right to defend themselves but I feel the Lebanese government is week and think it would have been better to work in partnership with the lebanese government to eradicate these terrorists in the south.

As it stands now the government is on the verge of collapse which will ultimately only strengthen Hezbollah paving the way for Syria and Iran to feed more fighters and weapons into another self destructing Middle Eastern country. Of course maybe the US wants this and wants to draw Iran into the fray.

That way the US has a legitimate reason for taking out its Nuclear Installations and is now using Israel by proxy to do the dirty work.

I dont see how bombing UN posts, roads, airports, ports in the north and apartment blocks is really achieving anything other than fostering future resentment and hatred of the Israeli’s, the US and UK.

40% of the Lebanese goverment is Hezbulla, the current Lebanese president feels the Hezbulla are heros and he respects their leadership. I don’t think you can work in partnership with them. Lebenon and the UN have had 6 years to take control of the south. The Lebenese government has ceded control of the south to the Hezbulla.

War is hell, and when you unlesh your army anything can happen, including bombing friendly targets (i.e. you own people or even innocent third parties). Lebanon had the last six years to fix this problem, they didn’t and now Hezbulla has forced Israel to respond. Hezbulla made this action necessary.

alex, who the hell are these idiots reading your blog? Hezbulla is using women and kids as sheilds knowing that it is better for them in world opinion. The idiots who responded to your post and the previous post saying Isreal is being to hard on these animals need to stop drinking the cool aid. I am not a violent man but have this urge to punch these monday morning quarterbacks in there stupid faces!

Yea, sort of blows my mind. I understand why we have problems in the middle east - we just don’t see the world in the same way. The world is so small today that it is hard to ignore the differences…

Chris, lets keep it civilised… there is no need to go punching anyone but Isreal is a relatively young state and there is resentment when people occupy land that is not theres. I no more like Hezbollah than you do but you cant just look at this conflict in isolation you have to look at the whole history of that region. Right now both sides are killing innocents and that just not right and they need to be stopped… but this old testament stuff of an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth… just doesnt work… 2000 years of history shows us that… and there were no quarterbacks back then.

I make no apologies for being 100% unabashadly Pro-Israel, but the naivete of some people is staggering. Thank you Alex for pointing out the obvious - indiscriminate rocket attacks deserves the kind of response were seeing in the Middle East. Right or wrong, should a single attack ever happen again on US soil, we would be screaming for blood. The bottom line is that Israel lives in a tough neighborhood and they simply must continue acting like the toughest kid on the block. It might not be pretty or nice, but the alternative is total annihilation for the State of Israel.

If Israel had not oppressed the Palestinians there would be no PLO, if they had not spent 17 years acting tough in Lebanon there would be no Hezbollah, likewise if Britain had not occupied Ireland there would be no IRA and in Spain had the Spanish not brutalised the Basques there would be no ETA. Indeed if the Brits had not been so heavy handed in America there would have been no American war of Independence? One thing holds true. You oppress people they will rise up.

Of course with Jewish society running many facets of American society and half the Israeli soldiers sporting American accents is it any wonder most people stateside are so pro Israel.

Jonathan - The jewish conspiracy? Jews are running the U.S.? Sounds a lot like 1930’s Germany - remember Hilter? That was his excuse I supose.

The Arabs invaded Israel, not the other way around. It was almost 40 years ago so you might be too young to recall (I am). Six years ago Israel left Lebanon to the UN and the Lebanese to control. They occupied the South to control the Hezbulla. Six years have passed and the Hezbulla are still in control of the South. One year ago the Israelis created the first Palestinian state in the history of the world. They did it unilaterally - without agreement. What are the Palestinians doing with Gaza? Hamas uses it as a forward base for launching attacks on Israel.

Israel tried the peaceful approach and it just didn’t seem to work. When you enemy wants war it is hard not to give it to them…

OK - lets say Chris is right (at least to save the apoplexy he’s about to suffer). Israel’s response is entirely acceptable. Go Israel.

But .. isn’t their response kinda .. ill conceived?

Are they going to have any more luck than they’ve had in the past, at removing Hezbollah? It seems not.

Are they going to get the support they want from Lebanon after crippling the economy and putting them back 10 years? No.

Are they going to be viewed positively by the international community after the humanitarian crisis they’ve plunged Lebanon into? No.

Is Lebanon, in a weakened state more likely to harbour guerilla/terrorist action against Israel in the future? Yes.

Does Israel want to occupy Lebanon? No.

So, Israel pull back, and the UN goes in to control the border. The price paid in terms of regional instability and no real resolution to Israeli/Hezbollah relations seems pretty big to me.
